1858, Warren Expedition
The Warren Expedition arrives in the Black Hills under the command of Lieutenant Gouverneur Kimble Warren to perform the first comprehensive survey of the region. Lt. G.K.Warren was a West Point graduate and a member of the Army Corps of Topographical Engineers. This was his third exploration expedition into the Nebraska and Dakota territories.
The Warren Expedition's topographical survey included geological notes, but no concerted effort to discover or find gold was made since the mission was an overall survey of the region. The expedition did report on the probable existence of gold in the Black Hills.
