1890, Wounded Knee, p2
In December, Chief Sitting Bull was killed during the government's attempt to arrest him, and as a result his tribe fled, seeking safety first with Big Foot, Sitting Bull's half brother. The government ordered Big Foot to bring all of the tribe to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, but along the way they were intercepted by James Forsyth and the 7th Cavalry Regiment who brought them to Wounded Knee Creek, surrounded the camp with Hotchkiss guns and ordered the Sioux to turn over their guns. When a deaf Native American refused, chaos ensued, shots were fired, and the entire tribe was massacred, including many soldier deaths to suspected friendly fire as well. Many in the tribe were women and children.
The massacre at Wounded Knee is considered by many to be the end of the so-called Indian Wars.
