1941, Borglum Dies
On March 6, 1941 following surgery, Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore, died. It was only days before his 74th birthday. His son Lincoln put the finishing touches on the sculpture as it stood, but due to the approaching pressures of World War II, the monument was declared to be complete in the state that we can see it now today. Lincoln Borglum is appointed as the park's first Superintendant from 1941 to 1943.
