been found and prospected, nor any other developments on the land. The Sioux Nation decries the settlement and refuses to take the money awarded, seeking instead a return of the land itself which had been ceded to them in the 1868 treaty.
From the U.S. point of view, the case has been settled whether the money is collected or not. To this day, that cash amount is being held by the US Treasury in trust, now with interest valued at over $500 million, still awaiting claim by the Sioux Nation. The Sioux continue to argue that it is the land and the land alone they will accept, as that is what has been lost. The legal battle is now over, but the social struggle continues.
