The Crazy Horse Monument

After the unveiling of the completed face, tourism began to pick up as well, so now the Crazy Horse foundation continues to receive visitors which are very respectable, even compared with nearby Mount Rushmore's. In 2005, Crazy Horse had over one million visitors alone, compared to Mount Rushmore's three million.(www.smithsonianmag.com) Even given the Native American focus of the nearby Crazy Horse memorial, however, not everyone is pleased with the mountain carving, even among the Sioux. The Defenders of the Black Hills organization, headed up by Charmaine White Face, disagrees with the need for such work to alter the sacred hills of the Paha Sapa, the Sioux name for the Black Hills.
