The Question of Land and Treaties, 4
visual and symbolic reminder for the Native Americans. The monument which can evoke for non-Native Americans such feelings of patriotism and nationalism serve as a constant reminder of greatness lost, and the price that has been paid to their conquerors. The question of land is resolved de facto -- the disruption which would be caused by returning the land itself to the Sioux outweighs the peace of mind or resolution of guilt which could be attained by such an action.
As with so many elements concerning Mount Rushmore, the question of land will remain subjective, and to a large part unresolved to the satisfaction of any, let alone to the satisfaction of all.
